ABOUT BATOSHEVO MONASTERY “THE ASSUMPTION”
The Monastery of Batoshevo was founded in the 13th century under the reign of King Mikhail Asen. It is located 20 km. to the south of
Sevlievo and at the distance of 170 km. from
Sofia. Near to the monastery flows the
Rositsa river. The monastery was burned to ashes during the Ottoman rule. In 1935 monk Isai settled here. He asked the Turkish ruler for permission to restore the monastery. Thanks to the local people 3 years later, he realize his goal. Then was erected new three – apse, three – coupon stone church. It is very interesting with its narthex, original picturesque murals at the west outer wall, at the central coupon and at the vault arches. Very valuable are the big wood – carved iconostasis and the preserved icons by Tsanko Zahariev (1790 – 1886), representative of the
Tryavna art school. It is not an accident that in the period of the Nation Revival here was opened the first high school.
