ABOUT THE PEAK
With its 2925 meters Musala is the highest peak not only in Bulgaria, but also on the Balkan Peninsula. It is situated in the Eastern (Musala) part of the
Rila mountain that has a typical alpine relief. The average annual temperature is –3.1C, and the snow-cover stays 8 months.
The name of the peak is of Turkish origin meaning "towards God". The first written document about the climbing of the peak considers Filip II – the father of Alexander the Great.
Musala peak is a preferable place for alpinism and tourism. The average annual number of its visitors is over 50000 people. At the foot of the summit is situated one of the most famous Bulgarian winter resorts
Borovets, and its slopes are strewn with numerous chalets.
There are located also an Alpine meteorological observatory and an Ecological observatory called “Musala”.
It will take about 3-4 hours to climb up Musala peak if you take the gondola lift from
Borovets to Yastrebetz and then follow the marked track that passes by the Musala chalet and goes to the top of the summit.
