ABOUT THE GORGE OF THE RIVER ISKAR
The western
Stara planina mountain border with Iskar defile on east, continues to Bulgarian – Yugoslavia and finish with the hill of Vrashka to the northwest. Most interesting sometimes are those legends, which explains with interesting story the appearance of one or another beautiful nature miracle (hillocks, peaks, stone figures and others). Such as this is the story for the beautiful Gorge of the river Iskar in the west
Stara planina mountain.
It is commonly known as the true pearl in the tourist necklace of Bulgaria. The Gorge of the river
Iskar starts from the valley of
Sofia. The central and the most beautiful part of the Gorge is actually located between the town of
Novi Iskar and
Lyutibrod. It is the most impressive and picturesque part. The slopes of the valley are sometimes flatter, than steep and in the end – forbidding. For centuries, the heart of the Iskar Gorge has been difficult to access. The railway line of today was built in 1889 and when this was complete, life in the Gorge started to change. New settlements appeared, new people came in, later came the road. In recent times the most picturesque place on the both side of the river is the most inaccessible, only this place succeed to preserve its clearness.
Through “the door to the Gorge” you can enjoy to the famous
Katina pyramids. The first 15 km inside the Gorge are populated by the houses and villas of the settlements Vlado Trichkov, Rebrovo, Lukovo, Thomson. The village of Rebrovo is the initial point of several marked tourist tracks: the Bukovets chalet – 3 hours way walk, accessible by bus, Leskova – 20 km. by regular bus to the Ogoya village and 2,5 km. of walking after that. The only town inside the Gorge is the town of
Svoge – situated in the wildest possible part of the Gorge.
The Gorge of the
river Iskar reveals unusually beautiful views. This nature miracle is enticing place for the fan of the mountains, and for all other people who want to enjoy to the superior beauty of the Bulgarian nature and mostly to the miracles that
Stara planina mountain reveals to us.
