ABOUT ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESERVE “KABILE”
National archaeological reserve “Kabile” is located 8 km northwest of the town of Yambol. In the antiquity the town of Kabile was an important economic, religious and cultural center in southeast Thrace and downstream of the Tundja river. It appeared in the end of the II century BC as a large cult center on the “Zajchi vrah” hill, at the bend of the Tonzos river (now the Tundja river).
In 341 BC the Macedonian tzar Philip II seized Kabile, and later there lived the most famous warlord of all times – Alexander Macedonian III the Great.
In the first half of the III century BC Kabile was a residence of the Thracian tzars Spartok and Skostok. In the middle of the III century the monarchical power was substituted with city government.
In III – II century BC Kabile was the only town in Thrace that had its own mint where tzar and town’s money was stamped.
During the whole Hellenic epoch Kabile maintained intensive trade relations with the Hellenic centers Mala Asia, Egea and Pont.
In 72 –71 BC the town was conquered by the Romans lead by Mark Lukul and approximately in 45 BC became part of the Roman province Thrace.
In the beginning of the II century AD Kabile became one of the most important Roman military camps in the province. Till the end of the III century AD there successively bivouacked two cohorts. After the reforms made by emperor Dioclecian, in the beginning of the IV century AD Kabile became one of the five leading Episcopal centers in the region.
In 378 AD Kabile was conquered again, this time by the Goths lead by Fritigern.
In the end of VI century AD the town was destroyed by the avars and stopped existing. In the period X – XIV century a small Renaissance settlement was built over the foundations of Kabile.
In 1965 the territory on which Kabile once stood was declared a protected area, cultural monument of national significance and national archaeological reserve covering a space of more than 600 decares.
