ABOUT THE SCHOOL
The Filip Kutev Music School is situated in the small town of
Kotel in the picturesque
Stara Planina Mountain. It was founded on 2.10.1967, and was the first high school for Bulgarian folk singing and instrumental music in Europe. It offers foreigners as well as Bulgarians the opportunity to learn Bulgarian folk music and to feel the Bulgarian spirit and culture. Students can also watch the process of making and preparing Bulgarian folk instruments. There is a wonderful base for learning and living.
The extensive, picturesque campus of the school includes:
- 200-seat concert hall
- Ballet hall
- Musical library of records and tapes
- Dozen of individual lesson / practice rooms with pianos
- Dormitory with a dining room
- Hotel for tourists and guests.
SCHOOL’S PROGRAM
The school’s program is 5 years long and trains students in the following specialties: kaval (flute), gaida (bagpipe), tambura (mandolin), gadulka (rebek), folk singing, dancing, and making folk instruments. The students live at the school dormitory and study both general and musical subjects. They have daily individual lessons in folk music and piano, taught by highly qualified teachers.
All students participate in one or more school orchestras. The different orchestras and ensembles (vocal, instrumental, vocal-instrumental and dance) vary in size, utilizing 7, 14, 22, 35 or 45 persons.
Students take part in various concerts, festivals and competitions throughout the country and abroad.
